From the Bench: Hand- Forging a Custom Sapphire Ring

From the Bench: Hand- Forging a Custom Sapphire Ring

This past week was full of surprises. I had the honor of creating an engagement ring for my close friends. This was such a fun piece to design, simple, but not understated. Just earthy enough, but still brilliantly beautiful.

What made this project even more special was that it was my first engagement ring. I'd shaped countless pieces at my bench, but never had I taken on something with this level of significance.

I used recycled silver from my own bench, remnants of my creative journey. There's something beautiful about transforming leftover pieces into something that will last a lifetime.

The technical work was meticulous. Sanding and polishing silver to the level of refinement this ring demanded took patience and precision.

And then there's the sapphire - exactly what we'd envisioned. Seeing it come together in that final moment is always worth the work.

But here's what made this story truly unforgettable: being woven into the proposal's secret. I became part of the carefully orchestrated plan—the silver was discreetly passed along during her birthday celebration, and then, days later, when she came in to design her own stacking band, I got to subtly guide her toward stone and design choices for a ring she had no idea was already hers. It was like being a co-conspirator in something beautiful. Holding that knowledge, understanding the weight of what I'd created, and eventually learning how the proposal unfolded—that was the true treasure of this entire experience.

If you're dreaming of a custom heirloom piece that tells your story, I'd love to collaborate with you. Click here to share your vision with me, and let's create something that will be treasured for generations.
