There is a distinct frequency to things that have been shaped by the elements. They refuse to be rushed, and their style certainly cannot be put in a box.
The sea glass in my collection is never bought from a commercial supplier. It was sourced straight from the cold shores of Lake Michigan during my time living in Wisconsin and my visits back home to see my family. Each piece of glass spent decades being tossed, smoothed, and refined by the water until it was ready to be found.
But not all treasures are soft.
Recently, a fellow member of the Vista Gem and Mineral Society gifted me a pretty little chunk of raw abalone shell to cut alongside some fossilized coral. Her husband is a deep-sea diver, and he harvested these pieces straight from the ocean floor.
Cutting abalone is a beautiful process, but it requires absolute respect. The dust from cutting raw shell is highly toxic to breathe. You have to use water systems, masks, and immense care to carve it safely. When you wear one of these finished abalone pieces, you are wearing something that required true adventure and discipline to bring to life.
And gosh, it is absolutely stunning.
